Councilman Leroy Comrie, a candidate for Queens Borough President, has curiously yet to file his latest disclosure report with the Campaign Finance Board.
A Comrie spokesman said yesterday that he would try to put the filing up later that day. Unlike every other beep candidate, Comrie’s filing is still unavailable as of Friday at 6:30 pm. What could this mean? Possibly nothing, though the campaign incurs a daily fine of $75.
Comrie’s filing is arguably the most significant in the race because he is a favorite of the county organization who has thus far struggled to raise money. Though he is chair of the City Council Land Use Committee and has made his intentions known for some time that he wants to be borough president, he has managed to only raise a little over $60,000. Comrie needs to break six figures to keep up with State Sen. Jose Peralta, who in a shorter amount of time raised $134,680; Melinda Katz’s impressive $280,844; and of course, Councilman Peter Vallone Jr.’s million dollars.
Insiders believe that Comrie may be coaxed into leaving the race and becoming a deputy borough president if he doesn’t have a good showing in this and the subsequent filing period. Comrie’s spokesman would not disclose a round number of what he raised when questioned repeatedly.
That isn’t a great sign.
