Much Vi-to About Nothing

Pardon the abominable pun in this headline, but it seemed apt for the fascinating Vito Lopez redistricting saga being chronicled in the NY Post. According to the series of stories, the final map put out by the City Council Districting Commission was engineered for Lopez’s residence to be dumped into term-limited Councilwoman Diana Reyna’s district, completing his master plan to run for the seat next year.
The latest news is that Speaker Quinn isn’t happy with this ploy because, as the only woman in the mayoral race, she doesn’t want to be tied to Lopez, who is embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal. Quinn also appointed five of the 15 members of the commission, giving her a significant say in the final outcome of the map.
Whether the ex-Brooklyn Democratic Boss gets his alleged way or not in this skirmish isn’t the point here, however. Lopez has plenty of time to move into Reyna’s district. Today is November 26 and he just needs to be living within the boundaries of the 34th District by the likely primary date in September 2013.
Plenty of time for a frustrating Craigslist apartment hunt.
